The two have known one another since middle school and met in their school's electric shop class.

The product demonstrated was the company's axial flux motor. The motor is the only consumer grade modular motor that can be repaired on site, which saves expense and downtime. Such a feature can be vital in situations where repairs are needed at sewage treatment plants or if a hospital life-support machine fails. The motors can be used for everything from pace-makers to underground drilling machines and are especially suited for situations in which motors are needed to run around the clock.

Rather than focus on improving current motor designs, Vanderelli and Carter started afresh, researching and experimenting to come up with something truly new.

“Our goal wasn't to make a motor better; it was to make a better motor,” Vanderelli explained.

“My philosophy is to strip complexities for greater efficiency,” Vanderelli said. “After 150 years of using the same motor technology, our design allows for a whole realm of possibilities that motors were not capable of. It's such a unique design, we don't know what all of the possibilities are.”

Though Vanderelli holds an array of patents for his numerous inventions, this will be the first patent he and Carter hold together.

Lynda Dupre serves as company manager and investor and has had past experience working with other patented products.

“This isn't my first go-around bringing new technology to the market,” Dupre said. “And I just believe in Timm.”

Marketing assistant Bev Struble lauded the work of the Kress Motor Team. “Timm has done a really neat thing. He's got the love to be an inventor; you have to believe what you see when you think out of the box,” she said.

Vanderelli and his team have been traveling across Pennsylvania as well as to other states demonstrating the product's capabilities. They are focusing on introducing their motor technology to the consumer market and are also looking into grant money options. Their ten horsepower motor will be ready to go at the end of the summer.

In the meantime, the crew will continue traveling and exposing the public to the invention.

“Our motors are perfect for anything life-sustaining,” Vanderelli stated. “Submarines, space crafts; our machines have sustainability. We are trying to convince potential users that this is the ultimate motor.”

Rebecca Ridinger is a freelance writer for Trib Total Media.

Original Article

For Ligonier firm, motors not on the mend for long

http://www.kresstechnology.com/updates--press-releases/for-ligonier-firm-motors-not-on-the-mend-for-long

http://www.kresstechnology.com/updates--press-releases/for-ligonier-firm-motors-not-on-the-mend-for-long#comments

kress in the press

Timm Vanderelli of Kress Motors in Ligonier with his invention, the Axial Flux Switched DC Motor. But when the motors break down, they can take weeks to repair—a time frame that is problematic when the motors are handling essential tasks like pumping a town's water or keeping a person on life support.

Kress Motors LLC, a Ligonier company that was founded in 2009 by local attorney Lynda Dupre, thinks it has a solution.

The company's Axial Flux Motor is free of the complex electrical windings and magnets that make up traditional electric motors. As a result, the design is easier to repair: Rather than hauling a large, heavy broken motor out of a water pumping station and waiting weeks for it to be repaired, a mechanic could repair a similarly damaged Kress motor on-site in a matter of hours, said Brian Ott, the company's chief technical officer.

And the motor could continue to run even while a mechanic repairs its parts, Mr. Ott said.

Kress has already patented some aspects of its design—which was created by childhood friends Timm Vanderelli of Ligonier and Rodney Carter of Tennessee—and the company is building prototypes. The latest prototype, which is 0.25 horsepower, resembles a disc about a foot in diameter encircled by a dozen reams of copper coil.

To convince customers to take a chance on its creation, the company needs to build more prototypes.

Mr. Ott said Kress is currently scaling up its latest model to a 10-horsepower engine. If the motor remains functional and efficient even in the more powerful version, he said the company will begin courting customers more vigorously.

Or to put it in marketing terms, "We're looking for a champion customer that is interested in the high efficiency, easily repairable, low life-cycle cost that the Kress motor would represent," Ms. Dupre said.

Competition in the multibillion-dollar electric motor market will be fierce. In the United States alone, roughly 30 million motors are sold for industrial purposes each year.

Kress hasn't brought any products to market yet, though Mr. Ott and Ms. Dupre estimate the company will do so by 2014. Mr. Vanderelli believes the new model is flexible enough to be used in a variety of industries. The company will decide which market to enter based on customer interest once it leaves the prototype phase.

So far, Ms. Dupre said the company has spent just under $1 million and has been funded largely by private investment.

Mr. Vanderelli, who used to work as a computer technician for Ms. Dupre's Ligonier law firm, has long had a fascination with technology and inventing.

He and his childhood friend Mr. Carter grew up taking apart household appliances and figuring out how they worked. Though the Kress motor is Mr. Carter's first patent, Mr. Vanderelli already holds several others and created his first invention at the age of 15: a transistor tester.

Mr. Vanderelli decided to devote himself full time to the motor project he and Mr. Carter started several years ago. Ms. Dupre said she chose to invest in their creation because she had faith in Mr. Vanderelli's "inventor's genius."

The company, which is based out of her Ligonier office, currently employs Mr. Carter, Mr. Vanderelli and Mr. Ott, but Ms. Dupre said she intends to hire two to four more people in the next six months as the company progresses further into product development.

Daniel Sisgoreo: dsisgoreo@post-gazette.com, 412-263-1410 or on Twitter @DanielSisgoreo.

First Published June 18, 2013 12:42 am

Original Article

Kress Motors Introduces Field Repairable Motor

http://www.kresstechnology.com/updates--press-releases/kress-motors-introduces-revolutionary-axial-flux-motor

http://www.kresstechnology.com/updates--press-releases/kress-motors-introduces-revolutionary-axial-flux-motor#comments

press releases

New Kress motor eliminates heavy back-iron with independently controlled stators for high-reliability, high efficiencies in electrical motor applications.Ligonier, Pennsylvania, June 27, 2013 – Kress Motors LLC is giving demonstrations of a prototype electric motor that eliminates the requirement for an expensive rare-earth based magnet array and the heavy iron yoke structure that is required for traditional Switched-DC electric motors. This new design uses technology invented [...]

New Kress motor eliminates heavy back-iron with independently controlled stators for high-reliability, high efficiencies in electrical motor applications.

Ligonier, Pennsylvania, June 27, 2013 – Kress Motors LLC is giving demonstrations of a prototype electric motor that eliminates the requirement for an expensive rare-earth based magnet array and the heavy iron yoke structure that is required for traditional Switched-DC electric motors. This new design uses technology invented by Timm Vanderelli and Rodney Carter, and is protected by a newly-granted U.S. patent and two additional patents that are currently pending.

This revolutionary motor design delivers dramatic commercial benefits by:
    • Reduces weight through a simpler design with no back-iron
    • Reduces electrical consumption and repair downtime for lower life cycle costs
    • Improving the ability to control and monitor motor performance

“This new motor design will deliver efficiencies of over 92%," stated John Kimball, President of Kress Motors LLC at the demonstration session held at Kress Motors headquarters in Ligonier, PA. He added: “The new design delivers far greater operational reliability because the motor continues to rotate even if one or more of the easily-removable field windings fail. This is in contrast to the complete rotational failure of traditional AC or DC motors due to winding failures. Winding failures in traditional AC or DC motors often result in a two to three week off-line repair period for these conventional electric motors.”

Inventor Timm Vanderelli stated that “the new digital microprocessor-based drive module for the Kress motor also provides the capability to monitor the health of the motor under load, and to quickly identify potential operational issues before they occur. Coupled with the ability to repair a failed winding in minutes, rather than days at a rewind shop, the Kress motor delivers reliability advantages that exceed that of traditional electric motor technologies.”

Brian Ott, Chief Technology Officer, stated that “Kress Motors intends to utilize local American expertise in this process whenever possible. An example of this is the planned use of 'Hiperco,' a custom-designed magnetic metal offered by Carpenter Technologies, the parent company of Latrobe Specialty Metals. Hiperco was specifically developed for high-efficiency electric motors.” Mr. Ott further commented that “while the technical innovation delivered in this motor is impressive, the operational benefits are far more important to the OEM market for motors in the 10 horsepower and greater motor segments.”

About Kress Motors LLC
Kress Motors LLC was founded in 2009 by Lynda Dupre in order to continue development
on the axial flux motor designed by Timm Vanderelli and Rodney Carter.
Based in Ligonier, Pennsylvania, Kress Motors LLC includes industry consultants
and electric motor experts on its Advisory Board as well as local investors.

For more information, contact:
Brian Ott (814) 254-8316 • bott@kressmotors.com • www.kressmotors.com
