Kress Motors Introduces Field Repairable Motor

New Kress motor eliminates heavy back-iron with independently controlled stators for high-reliability, high efficiencies in electrical motor applications.

Ligonier, Pennsylvania, June 27, 2013 – Kress Motors LLC is giving demonstrations of a prototype electric motor that eliminates the requirement for an expensive rare-earth based magnet array and the heavy iron yoke structure that is required for traditional Switched-DC  electric motors.  This new design uses technology invented by Timm Vanderelli and Rodney Carter, and is protected by a newly-granted U.S. patent and two additional patents that are currently pending.

This revolutionary motor design delivers dramatic commercial benefits by:
    •    Reduces weight through a simpler design with no back-iron
    •    Reduces electrical consumption and repair downtime for lower life cycle costs
    •    Improving the ability to control and monitor motor performance

“This new motor design will deliver efficiencies of over 92%," stated John Kimball, President of Kress Motors LLC at the demonstration session held at Kress Motors headquarters in Ligonier, PA.  He added:  “The new design delivers far greater operational reliability because the motor continues to rotate even if one or more of the easily-removable field windings fail.  This is in contrast to the complete rotational failure of traditional AC or DC  motors due to winding failures. Winding failures in traditional AC or DC motors  often result in a two to three week off-line repair period for  these conventional electric motors.”

Inventor Timm Vanderelli stated that “the new digital microprocessor-based drive  module for the Kress motor also provides the capability to monitor the health of the motor under load, and to quickly identify potential operational issues before they occur.  Coupled with the ability to repair a failed winding in minutes, rather than days at a rewind shop, the Kress motor delivers reliability advantages that exceed that of traditional  electric motor technologies.”

Brian Ott, Chief Technology Officer, stated that “Kress Motors intends to utilize local American expertise in this process whenever possible.  An example of this is the planned use of 'Hiperco,' a custom-designed magnetic metal offered by Carpenter Technologies, the parent company of  Latrobe Specialty Metals.  Hiperco was specifically developed for high-efficiency electric motors.”  Mr. Ott further commented that “while the technical innovation delivered in this motor is impressive, the operational benefits are far more important to the OEM market for motors in the 10 horsepower and greater motor segments.”
